The Path to Humility

A Sermon on Philippians 2:1-18 by Pastor Allan Santos

Introduction

In the second chapter of the book of Philippians the Apostle Paul reiterates to us the modelling of our Lord Jesus about humility.  Paul reminded the Philippian church about how Jesus displayed His obedience and humility to God the Father in fulfilling His plans and purpose for His life.  Jesus humbled Himself by serving the people and giving His life so that all who believed in Him would be saved. Just like Jesus, may we all humble ourselves before God and be committed to serving God’s purposes in our lives.

Outline:

  1. Encouragement to be selfless and considerate of others (vv.1-4)

  2. Jesus’ model of humility (vv.5-11)

    • Jesus thought of others not Himself (vv.5-6)

    • Jesus embraced being God’s servant (v.7)

    • Jesus’ sacrifice to obey God’s will (v.8)

    • Jesus glorified God through His submission (vv.9-11)

  3. Press on in our Sanctification (vv.12-13)

  4. Paul’s call to persevere and be devoted to living for God (vv.12-13)

Application from God’s Word:

  1. This passage will affirm to us the mission, nature and servanthood of our Lord Jesus Christ. It tells us of His equality with God and of His coexistent humanity - how He is 100% God and 100% man, all at the same time. It tells us of His obedience to the will of the Father up to the point of dying on the cross. But it also tells us of His ultimate exaltation, how every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that He is Lord.  May we all be reminded that Jesus is our Lord and Savior and let us live a life that is under His lordship.

  2. The Apostle Paul emphasized to us that as God’s children we must display our lights in this darkened world.  Paul commanded us “to work out our salvation with fear and trembling”. In context, this is a command to show in action the reality of our salvation. As we work out our salvation in loving relationship, lost people will see the difference God makes in our daily lives and be so drawn to Him.

  3. One of our greatest challenges as Christians today is the problem of pride. We simply think too highly of ourselves.  Let us remember to be humble, considerate, understanding and respectful of others.
