Hannah: Standing Brave in Heartbreak

A Sermon on 1 Samuel 1 by Pastor Allan Santos

Watch the sermon here.

Introduction

Suffering, heartbreaks, and pain usually affect our relationships with the Lord. Sometimes we grow bitter because we feel like God has abandoned us in the middle of our struggles and problems in life. At other times, our challenges and difficulties drive us to a deep dependence and humility before God that deepens our walk with Him.

Hannah was a great example of a life that was wholeheartedly committed to God despite the pain, rejection, and suffering she encountered. She stood brave and trusted God’s power, love, and sovereignty, that is why she experienced God’s blessings and workings in her life.

Outline

  1. Hannah’s heartbreak, struggles, and dissatisfaction in life (vv.1-8)

  2. Hannah’s petition and trust in God’s sufficiency (vv.9-12)

  3. God’s answer and blessing to Hannah’s despair (vv.13-20)

  4. Hannah’s wholehearted worship and commitment to God (vv.21-28)

Life Application

  1. God knows your pain, challenges, and struggles in life. Just like Hannah. May we trust in God’s sovereignty in our difficult situation and wait faithfully for God’s answers to our prayers.

  2. When it was time for Hannah to fulfill her promise to God, she did not hesitate to dedicate Samuel to doing the Lord’s work by presenting him to Eli. How about you? Is it easy for you to be “sticky-fingered” with the gifts God gave you? May we be reminded of Hannah’s example and give to God that which is more precious to us. Trust that He always gives us back much more than we could ever imagine or hope for.

  3. Are you experiencing any difficulties in life that hold you down? Are you in a situation that has you in despair? Why not spend some quality time with God and allow His presence in your life to lead you to stand brave and grateful even in despair? God is faithful and good in sustaining you each day.
