Jesus’ Teachings About Love

A Sermon on Mark 12:28-34 by Pastor Allan Santos

Introduction

Jesus taught us a lot of principles about love in the Bible. Loving God and the people around us would summarize the ten commandments given by the Lord to Moses in the Old Testament. Moreover, in the New Testament, Jesus modeled how true love should be lived by His disciples.  He even elevated the application of this teaching by forgiving and showing love to our enemies.  Let us reflect on this deeper as we go through the different Bible passages where Jesus exhorted His disciples and followers to show love in their every day living.

Outline

  1. Loving God and the people around us is our pronounced calling. (Mark 12:28-34)

  2. Love unifies us with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. (John 14:15-21)

  3. Loving and forgiving our enemies prove that we are embracing living in God’s way. (Matthew 5:43-48)

  4. Showing compassion and helping others in need is obedience to God’s command to love. (Luke 10:30-36)

Life Applications

  1. God has commanded us to love Him and the people around us.  This love should not be superficial but must be sincere and true and must come from the heart.  How are you showing your love for God and the people around you recently?

  2. The message of the Parable of the Good Samaritan is so relevant in our generation today. We are called to minister and help people who are in need, even if they don’t look like us, do not speak our language, or do not believe in our God.  The Lord will allow these people to know Him through our actions, words, and how we conduct ourselves.

  3. Jesus commanded us to love our enemies even though we may think that it is impossible. We must pray for God’s grace for ourselves and for others. Our desire should be for people to be changed by God and be made right before God, even for our enemies. This is the kind of love that our Father has, and we should exemplify it for His glory.
