Introduction
How do you show your love and service to God recently? Do you serve the Lord half-heartedly or do you serve Him with a sincere heart by giving your best to honor the Lord. Our passage today will show us about two characteristics of a person who would like to serve and honor Jesus Christ.
A Pharisee named Simon invited Jesus to his house but did not give Him honor and distinction as a true rabbi and Lord. On the other hand, an unnamed woman, who was described as a notorious sinner, showed her complete love and devotion to Jesus by anointing Him with an expensive perfume oil to show how she wholeheartedly love and honor Jesus in her life. She also wet Jesus’ feet with her tears, which showed how she needed His forgiveness and acceptance.
Outline
The sinful woman’s sincere faith and offering of love to Jesus (vv. 36-38)
Simon’s self-righteousness and unfair judgement (vv. 39-40)
Jesus’ principle about forgiveness and love (vv. 41-42)
Jesus affirmed the sinful woman’s act of love and whole-hearted devotion to Him (vv. 44-50)
Application from God’s Word:
The sinful woman came into the house of Simon to honor Jesus by anointing Jesus’ feet and submitting to His lordship in her life. How do you show your service and love to Jesus today?
Simon the Pharisee invited Jesus in his home, but he had no desire to submit to Him nor did he show his need of Him. Some Christians may “act” interested in knowing Jesus - they may pray at meals, attend services, read their Bible, and enjoy the company of good people - but they could be not truly devoted to Him. May we be sincere in our desire to grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus.
Jesus affirmed the woman’s faith, love, service, and sincere repentance. Jesus knows what is in your heart and you will not be condemned if you confess your sins and profess your love for and faith in Him.
