Introduction

How much do you know about the Holy Spirit?  Do you believe that He exists even before the creation of the world?  The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity.  He comes from the Father and is sent by the Son.

As Jesus gave His farewell discourse in John 14, He encouraged His disciples by telling them about His resurrection and exaltation. He also gave them hope when He promised that the Holy Spirit (Advocate, Helper, Counselor, Comforter) will come and be with them. This passage will emphasize what Jesus would like us to remember: our Christian life cannot be lived and will not be complete and victorious apart from the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Outline

  1. Jesus’ Promise of the Holy Spirit (vv.15-16)

The Holy Spirit creates. (Genesis 1:2)

The Holy Spirit Convicts and Calls (John 15:26; John 16:8)

The Holy Spirit Empowers (Acts 1:4,8; Romans 15:18-19)

  2.  The Presence of the Holy Spirit (vv. 17-24)

The Holy Spirit indwells us. (1 Corinthians 3:16)

The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts. (1 Corinthians 12:1-11)

  3. The Power of the Holy Spirit (vv. 25-26)

    The Holy Spirit Sanctifies Us:

    • He helps us in prayer (Romans 8:26-27)

    • Illuminates Scripture (John 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:10)

    • He teaches and directs us (John 14:26)

Life Applications

  1. We have all the reasons to rejoice because Jesus did not leave us alone. The Person of the Holy Spirit was given to guide us, to empower us to live victoriously and remind us of what we have learned from the Scriptures. Let us praise the Lord for the gracious gift of the Holy Spirit.

  2. The Holy Spirit helps us to be strong and fruitful.  It is through the indwelling Spirit and our faith that Christ dwells in our hearts.  The Spirit strengthens our faith so that it is not weak but empowered in order for us to enjoy His loving fellowship. (Ephesians 3:16-18)

  3. Be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Serve the Lord through the leading and power of the Holy Spirit in your life.

Memory Verse

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
