Claiming God’s Victories

A Sermon on Joshua 5:13-6:27 by Pastor Allan Santos

Introduction

Conquering the Promised Land was an enormous and perplexing task.  However, because of God’s support and leading to Joshua and the Israelites, they were successful and other nations feared them.

In our study today, we will see that Joshua and the people of Israel had finally crossed the Jordan River to start their journey in following the will of the Lord. They had prepared themselves spiritually with complete submission to the Lord and they were ready to claim for themselves the land that flows with milk and honey. Their first mission was to conquer Jericho, a fortified city and one of the most powerful cities in their generation. Let us observe and witness how the Lord guided them to victory.

Outline

  1. Joshua’s encounter with the Commander of the Lord’s Army (Joshua 5:13-15)

  2. The impenetrable stonewall of Jericho (Joshua 6:1)

  3. Joshua’s courageous acts and Israel’s wholehearted obedience to God’s instructions (Joshua 6:2-14)

  4. Israel prevailed in conquering Jericho because of God’s sovereignty (Joshua 6:15-21)

  5. Rahab’s decision to believe and have faith in God allowed her and her entire household to be saved (Joshua 6:22-25)

  6. The Lord’s hand was with Joshua and the Israelites and He gave them victory over the hardest obstacle that they encountered. (Joshua 6:26-27)

Life Lessons from God’s Word:

  1. The Lord’s hand was with Joshua and the Israelites because they displayed their all-embracing trust and obedience to His will and command. At the same time, Rahab’s family was saved because of her faith in God and her obedience. May we be like them in showing our complete obedience to God by standing on His promises and by following His commandments to us.

  2. This passage helps us to see God’s fingerprints, faithfully leading and guiding His children on their journey towards freedom and inheritance.  Despite their failings, He never abandoned them. Like the Israelites, we could be rest assured that God will not abandon us while we journey in this world.
