Defeat, Confession, and Victory

A Sermon on Joshua 7-8 by Elder Derrick Manalo

Watch the sermon here.

Introduction

In the story so far, the Israelites have everything going in their favor ever since they arrived in the Promised Land just as God told them. Chapter 1 through 6 of the book of Joshua highlights their victories. Chapter 7 poses a different mood. Here for the first time, Israel suffered defeat.

Let us look into one man’s action and how it caused a whole nation to suffer the consequence of that action. Let us all reflect on what this passage from the Bible reveals to us who God is.

Outline

  1. Even the smallest of disobedience leads to Defeat.

  2. God is just through our Confessions.

  3. Our true Victory is with God.

Application

  1. Let us always take a step of Obedience towards God so we can be accountable to one another.

  2. Let us be submerged into the Word so we wont be swayed to tolerate sin.

  3. Jesus Christ is our true victory. Apart from Him, we are doomed to fail.
