Jesus’ Message to Untransformed Hearts

A Sermon on Luke 18:18-30 by Pastor Allan Santos

Watch the sermon here.

Introduction

Is your heart transformed to obey and submit to God’s will in your life?  Or are you having a hard time following God because of your wrong priorities, selfishness, pride, laziness, and uncontrolled materialism? Jesus is worthy of our complete obedience and submission because He is our Lord and Saviour.  He commanded us to apply God’s Word in our lives and to carry our cross each day.

Today, let us reflect on how Jesus challenged and admonished a rich person who has an untransformed heart with regard to complete submission to God. Let us learn from Jesus’s words so that we could have a heart that is transformed and connected with God.

Outline

  1. Jesus’ challenge to have a heart that is fully submissive to God’s will (vv.18-22)

  2. Have a transformed heart that is loyal to God rather than to wealth/material possessions and a dishonest self-image (vv.23-27)

  3. Jesus’ exhortation to lean on God’s direction and provision as we obey His will and commandments (vv.28-30)

Life Applications

  1. Even if God wanted us to repent and surrender our lives to Him, He still acknowledges the freedom He gave for us to choose and to decide.  He wants us to have a heart that is willing to be transformed to obey His commandments and will in our lives.

  2. The rich young ruler turned his back from Jesus’ test and challenge him. Our priorities reflect the treasures that we value in our lives today.  Is God first in your life or is it yourself first before anything?

  3. Believing and following Jesus is the only way to have eternal life. Jesus cannot be our Saviour if He is not the Lord of our lives.  May we commit to putting Jesus at the center of our lives so that we could live a life that has meaning and at peace instead of the life that this corrupt world is offering us.
