Introduction

Why do you think it is hard to forgive others who mistreated, criticized, and judged your physical and intellectual abilities? As Christians, how should we view and apply Jesus’ teaching about forgiveness? The Gospels will exhort us as God’s children to bestow forgiveness to people who had hurt and offended us.

At the heart of Jesus’ teaching lies the painful and challenging practice of forgiveness. Forgiveness is a hard road to walk on, but it is the right way to free your life from hurts and bitterness. It is also the right path to experience freedom, peace, and harmony with others.

Outline

  1. Jesus bestowed forgiveness to Peter before he denied Him. (Luke 22:28-44)

  2. Jesus’ true disciples will forgive without keeping count.  (Matthew 18:21-35)

  3. Jesus taught His disciples about the prominence of forgiveness. (Matthew 6:14-15)

Life Application:

  1. There is always a reason why people act the way they do. Most of the time, it’s because of what others have done or how they were unfairly treated. Getting to know others and their backgrounds will often help us to be more merciful and forgiving. May we obey Jesus’ teaching about forgiveness even when it is hard.

  2. Remember Jesus’ great commandment to love others. By acting in love instead of hate, we lead our emotions instead of allowing them to lead us. This helps us to forgive those who have harmed us. (Romans 12:20-21)

  3. God calls us to forgive others as we have been forgiven (Ephesians 4:32). Allow the Lord to work in your life as you bestow forgiveness to people who have wounded you and will offend you in the future. Who do you need to forgive today?
