God’s Promise to David

A Sermon on 2 Samuel 7 by Pastor Allan Santos

Introduction

King David wanted to build a house for the Lord. Although the Lord said that it will not be him who will see this come in fruition, He still affirmed David that He will build the house of David and bless it. The Lord gave a promise to David that He will be a Father to his offspring. However, the Lord also said that if time comes that David’s offspring will sin against the Lord, that promise will be removed from their house. God’s promise does not depend on the righteousness of people but on His righteousness and perfect will. This passage will help us understand God’s faithfulness and goodness to Israel and to his chosen servant, King David.

Outline:

  1. • David’s desire to honor and glorify God (vv.1-3)

  2. God’s promise to bless and guide the house of David (vv.8-16)

  3. David’s thanksgiving and humility towards God (vv.18-21)

  4. David’s acknowledgement of God’s redemption to Israel (vv.22-24)

  5. David’s petition for God’s guidance and sustenance to his household (vv.25-29)

Life Applications:

  1. We have seen King David’s desire to honor God by offering Him the best temple or house that David and Israel could build. He wanted to exalt the Lord because of His faithfulness to them. What are you offering to the Lord today that will honor and give glory to His name?

  2. God said no to King David’s request to build a temple that will house the ark of the covenant. Has the Lord ever said no to your prayers and petition to Him? Even when you prayed with pure motives for something you thought you will please God. We need to remember that when God says no to our requests, He is not rejecting us - He just has a better plan in mind for our lives.

  3. God has established the life and family of King David even though he made a lot of mistakes and wrong decisions in life. God is so faithful that even we are not worthy of His blessings, He continues to bestow it to us. God’s promises are true, and we could hold on to it.
