A Blessed Life

A Sermon on Matthew 5:1-16 by Pastor Allan Santos

Watch the sermon here.

Introduction

Welcome to our new preaching series titled, “Jesus’ Courageous Teaching on Living”. We will be studying and unpacking Jesus’ famous sermon on the mount that was written in Matthew chapters 5 to 7. In this sermon, Jesus is giving us standards of living to follow as His beloved children and disciples. It is my prayer that all of us will be challenged and blessed by the Lord as we follow His powerful teachings in this sermon.

Jesus started His sermon on the mount by teaching the crowds who were following Him to live and have a blessed or happy life. The beatitudes introduce the sermon on the mount, a collection of Jesus’ teachings. These teachings of Jesus are a must for all of us - we need to obey them as Jesus modeled it to us in His life in the gospels.

Outline

  1. Blessings arise from lowliness (vv.1-5)

  2. Blessings arise from holiness (vv.6-9)

  3. Blessings arise from persecutions (vv.10-12)

  4. Blessings come when we live our calling to be salt and light of this world (vv.13-16)

Life Application

  1. Jesus taught us that blessed are those who are poor in spirit. To be poor in spirit means we should live a life with humility and being teachable.  Jesus wants us to humbly acknowledge our need of Him.

  2. Jesus is our great example of showing forgiveness and mercy. Even when he was suffering on the cross, he said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Since we all need mercy, we all must show mercy. Who are the people in your life today that you need to bestow forgiveness and mercy?

  3. All of us who have a relationship with Jesus would experience criticism and persecution because of our faith, the things we believe in and the things we do. We must courageously stand up for the principles of God and His Church. Our Father will bless us in this life and in our next life with Him.
